Teacher: What is the highest technique you hope to achieve?
Lee: To have no technique
Teacher: Very good. What are your thoughts when facing an opponent?
Lee: There is no opponent.
Teacher: And why is that?
Lee: Because the word “I” doesn’t exist.
Lee: A good fight should be like a small play, played seriously. A good martial artist does not become tense, but ready. Not thinking, yet not dreaming…ready for whatever may come. When the opponent expands, I contract. When the opponent contracts, I expand. And, when there is an opportunity, I do not hit, it hits all by itself. Bruce Lee from the film Enter The Dragon-1973
Life as we understand it, in our daily thoughts, in our daily movements and activities can be explained by the concept of Expansion and Contraction. The very beginning of our Earthly existance commenced with contractions and expansion. These contractions cause our mother’s cervix to shorten (contract) and dilate (expand) in prepartion for our physical journey on the planet.
Take a few minutes of everyday to focus on personal expansion ans contraction. Take the time to breath just sit and breath. Think about how inhaling expands your lungs and send oxygen throughout your whole body. Then focus on how exhaling contracts your lungs ans forces out carbon dioxide. Then realize how exhaling releases tension and relieves stress.
